Repair & interpretation at St Andrew’s

Project evaluation at St Andrew’s, a grade II* listed church in Lincolnshire.

Delivered in 2020-2021, the aim of the project was to undertake urgent repairs to the building and to work with the local community to create new interpretation, making the church more accessible and welcoming.

St Andrews Church is located in an isolated position at the edge of the rural Lincolnshire village of Halton Holegate. After several lead thefts the church was in need of urgent repair works. In January 2020, the team at St Andrews were awarded £153,000 from the National Heritage Lottery Fund for the Repairs and Heritage Community Project. The funding would allow for the urgent repairs, several exciting new community engagement   projects and the creation of new interpretation to  increase understanding of the church and village.

Bright Culture was commissioned to work alongside the team and support the evaluation of the project. Lisa designed an Evaluation Plan and Framework which set the baseline for recording data. The project was delivered during the COVID-19 pandemic which meant changes to the project and evaluation methodologies were made throughout delivery to ensure that data was collected safely and adhering to government restrictions.

Methodologies used for this project were; feedback forms, comment cards, volunteer interviews and 1:1 reflection sessions with the project team leader. The data was analysed as the project moved forward and changes made to activities and resources as a result.  The final part of the commission was the production of an Evaluation Report which the team sent to the funder. The report told the story of the impact and change created by the project and included a series of recommendations for how the data can be used to inform future projects.

Despite the challenges of the global pandemic that was Covid-19, which came into effect just after our project started, Lisa was influential in ensuring our project was kept on track, in particular the Community Heritage projects. The resulting evaluation report was documented in a very clear, professional manner and accurately portrayed our experiences and frustrations, but also the wonderfully successful outcomes of our journey through the Covid hit project.
